Binance hack 2026: $6.3 billion, explained

What happened, what Binance says about covering losses, and what Indian crypto users should check before reacting. Facts first, not fear.

Quick answer: Binance estimated a security breach at approximately $6.3 billion. TRM Labs dates the main theft to 29 October 2026, with most funds moved in about 20 minutes. Binance says it will cover losses; that is a company commitment, not an independent guarantee.

What happened to Binance?

In its 30 October disclosure, Binance estimated the impact at around $6.3 billion. TRM Labs reported approximately $6.36 billion in outflows across ten blockchains beginning at 20:05 UTC on 29 October — 1:35 am IST on 30 October. Most funds moved within about 20 minutes, but TRM also identified a later wave. The entire incident should not be described as lasting only 20 minutes.

TRM assessed that hot-wallet transaction-signing infrastructure was compromised and attributed the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group with high confidence. Reuters reported that assessment. This is forensic attribution by TRM, not a government confirmation or a completed technical investigation.

Binance said it found “no evidence” of a wallet private-key leak. That wording matters: it is not proof that every possible compromise has been ruled out. Later updates reported additional breach points.

How much was stolen — and what is covered?

About $6.3bnBinance’s estimated incident impact; TRM valued observed outflows at about $6.36bn.
Over $6.34bnCompany funds Richard Teng said Binance reserved, including $5bn held in affected token assets.
About $3bn frozenAssets Binance said were frozen on-chain. Frozen does not mean returned to the exchange or customers.

Binance initially said losses would be covered using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company resources. The later funding commitment should not be presented as proof that SAFU alone holds $6.34 billion, or that every loss has already been reimbursed.

Why could Bitcoin and crypto prices fall?

Security shocks can weaken confidence, prompt selling and create uncertainty about exchange operations. Leverage can amplify price moves through forced liquidations. But a hack is not a reliable buy-or-sell signal: interest rates, liquidity, geopolitical developments and other market flows also matter.

This article does not provide a live Bitcoin price or claim the breach caused every market move. A recovery, continued volatility or further weakness are all possible. Read our crypto market cycles guide for the wider picture.

Is Binance safe in India now?

An exchange account depends on both your own security and the platform’s custody controls. Two-factor authentication can help against account takeover, but it cannot prevent every exchange-level breach. A funding assurance is useful information, not a risk-free guarantee.

For Indian users, check current platform eligibility and legal requirements separately. This article does not establish that every Binance product is permitted in India. Keep transaction records and consult a qualified professional about obligations. If you use USDT, check the exact token, network and current withdrawal notice before sending anything.

Status caution: the cited 30 October updates described withdrawals as paused, with restoration pending; a later update said deposits were unaffected. Check the official app or announcement page for current status. Do not assume services have resumed from this article.

Account-safety checklist for Indian crypto users

  1. 01

Open the official app or type the exchange website address yourself. Avoid links in unsolicited messages, search ads or replies offering compensation.

  2. 02

Enable strong two-factor authentication or a passkey where supported, use a unique password, and review logged-in devices and API permissions.

  3. 03

Never share a seed phrase, password or one-time code. A recovery agent asking for an upfront payment is a major warning sign.

  4. 04

Before a transfer, verify the address, token and network. Check the current official service notice; use a small test transfer only when the network is operating normally.

  5. 05

Compare exchange custody with self-custody carefully. A hardware wallet can reduce reliance on an exchange, but losing keys or signing a malicious transaction can permanently lose funds.

  6. 06

Save account statements and transaction references. Use official support if your account is affected; avoid making rushed, leveraged trades to win money back.

Binance hack and safety: your questions

Was Binance hacked in October 2026?

Binance disclosed a security incident with an estimated impact of approximately $6.3 billion. TRM Labs dates the main outflows to 29 October 2026, starting at 20:05 UTC. The detailed Binance updates cited here were published on 30 October.

Is Binance safe in India after the hack?

No exchange can be described as risk-free. Binance says it will cover the losses, but that commitment is not an independent guarantee. Check official service notices, protect your account and assess custody risk. Indian eligibility and legal requirements are separate questions that this incident report does not resolve.

Will SAFU cover all the stolen funds?

Binance initially said it would use SAFU and company funds. Richard Teng subsequently said more than $6.34 billion of company funds had been reserved. These are company statements, not an independently audited finding or proof that all customer claims have been settled.

Have the frozen assets been recovered?

Not necessarily. Binance said approximately $3 billion had been frozen on-chain. Freezing restricts movement; returning assets to their rightful owner can require further technical and legal steps.

Can I withdraw from Binance now?

The 30 October updates cited in this article described withdrawals as paused and restoration as pending. This is not a live status feed. Check the current notice in the official Binance app or website for your token and network before initiating a transfer.

Does an exchange hack mean Bitcoin itself was hacked?

No. An exchange infrastructure compromise is different from a compromise of Bitcoin's network. It can still affect sentiment and prices, but it does not by itself show that Bitcoin's protocol has failed.
